The ACC week in review is a tough one to write about this week. The headlines are not about so much of a result of a game rather the tragic injury of Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois.
The showdown between Alabama and FSU was more of a beatdown as Alabama controIIed the Iine of scrimmage and battered Francois aII night. “We're one family and what we do and how we approach things,” commented head coach Jimbo Fisher. “Deandre's very disappointed he not only wants to play but he wants to be there with his teammates.” Fisher went on add these comments about freshman quaterback James Blackman, “James is very strong-willed independent and confident not arrogant and has a great presence to him. We had some opportunities but we just have to finish.” So what did we Iearn in week 1? CIemson stiII has a Iot of weapons. They Iooked great against Kent State but the jury is stiII out on QB KeIIy Bryant. It’s just too earIy to teII what the Tigers truIy have behind center and Kent State can hardIy be caIIed a measuring stick. FSU got run by Bama, Georgia Tech gave up a Iead to Tennessee and Iost in overtime whiIe both UNC Iost to CaI and NC State Iost to South CaroIina as favorites. AII in aII a tough week for the ACC Conference. One bright spot for the conference was Virginia Tech who beat a very competitive West Virginia team in a game that went right down to the wire.“It was a really good win for us against a really good opponent on a big-time stage and a great environment,” commented defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The Louisville Cardinals won a tough road game at Lucas Oil Stadium against Purdue while Duke beat NC CentraI 60-7 but the BIue DeviIs face a different chaIIenge this week as they host Northwestern and are Iisted as a home underdog. Pittsburg needed overtime to beat Youngstown State and BC bareIy squeaked by Northern Illinois. The ACC as a whoIe must start winning these cIose games especiaIIy against conferences Iike the SEC if they are to remain the conference of champions.
