This Saturday Night at Unitas Stadium the first month of the CAA
Football will come to an end with a good matchup between Towson and Villanova. Both teams come into this game after tough losses last weekend. The Tigers had a tough game last weekend in Long Island against a very good Seawolves team. At the same time, the Wildcats lost to another very good team in Albany. Last season, both teams played a difficult game in Villanova, PA. but Wildcats came out with the win by a score of 40-21. This rematch will be very good this weekend, with theTigers hoping to get their offense back on the right track after 3 tough roads the last couple weeks.

Chris Heidel -This Friday Night at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham North Carolina,
the Miami Hurricanes return to the stadium where they had one of their most classic ending to a game with the game-winning kickoff return for a TD from Corn Elder. After final play, their were eight penalty flags thrown. The officials concluded that there weren't any penalties during the return for the touchdown but the replay proved later that there were indeed eight penalties on the play. The results ultimately led to the dismissal of several officials. The Hurricanes won the game and saved their season, which was remarkable given that during the week of the game, the Hurricanes Fired Al Golden after their worst loss in school history to National Championship Runner-up Clemson with a score of 56-0. Larry Scott, father of former Hurrican and current Pittsburgh Steeler Cornerback Artie Burns, would take over the team from Golden. Let's turn the page to 2017 where theHurricanes are 2-0 after beating Toledo at Hard Rock Stadium last weekend after being off for 21 days because of Hurricane Irma. The Duke Blue Devils are 4-0 on the season after beating their rivals last Saturday in Chapel Hill. This upcoming matchup between the Hurricanse of Miami and the Blue Devils of Duke will be a battle of unbeatables. Chris Heidel - The CAA conference opener for both schools is this weekend between Elon
Phoenix and Richmond Spiders. Both teams are coming in the game on two games winning streaks after finishing their non-conference schedules last weekend. Elon has never beat Spiders in their first 3 meetings but they are looking to end that streak this weekend at Robbins Stadium on the campus of University of Richmond. On the other side of the field, Richmond had a tough start to the season after their opening game at Sam Houston St was delayed a week after Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area. Their game was moved to Waco Texas to play the Bearcats, but they still lost that game. They rebounded to win their next two games to get ready for Conference Play this weekend vs Elon. Chris Heidel - Week 3 of the CAA Football season got underway this weekend and it was the last weekend of non conference games for 12 teams. #1 James Madison Dukes played another football team from the commonweath of Virginia in Norfolk State. The Dukes had no issues with the Spartans this afternoon, beating them by a score 75-14.
Former Richmond Spiders Football Coach Mike London traveled to River City for the first time with his new team, the Howard Bison. Unfortunately, it ended up being a tough afternoon losing to Spiders by score of 68-21. Delaware rebounded after being shutout by Virginia Tech last weekend to beat Cornell by score 41-14. Rhode Island also had a great day, getting their first win of season beating Harvard by a score of 17-10. The last game of the afternoon saw the Wildcats of New Hampshire lose their first game of the season to Holy Cross by score 51-26. It was a good night all around for the league as all the CAA Football teams won all their non conference games. Some of the highlights from games the great road victory for Towson Tigers with a game winning FG to beat St.Francis(PA) by the score 16-14. Another close win was Elon Phoenix beating Charleston Southern by a score 19-17. Other winners were Albany,Stony Brook,Villanova and William and Mary. Rob J. Moore - My alumni pride was bruised deeply after Towson fell hard to the Terps with a final score of 63-17. Maryland hit hard and fast with a 9 yard touchdown pass with 12:20 to play in the 1st quarter. They would strike twice more before the end of the quarter with a 34 yard TD pass from quarterback D.J. Moore and a 74 yard run TD courtesy of Ty Johnson.
The 2nd quarter marked Towson’s first appearance on the scoreboard after a 10 yard pass from quarterback Ryan Stover, The Terps responded with a 75 yard interception return by Darnell Savage Jr., making he score 21-7. Halftime provided only a short respite for the Tigers as Maryland scored quickly in the 3rd quarter thanks to a 46 yard running TD from Ty Johnson, followed quickly with 25 yard running TD from Jake Funk. The Terps rounded out the 3rd quarter with a 21 yard running TD by quarterback D.J. Moore. The 4th quarter brought slightly less tragedy to the Tigers as, even though Maryland scored early with a 1 yard run, Rodney Dorsey managed to catch a 59 yard pass for a Tigers touchdown. Javon Leake avenged the Terps with a 61 yard running TD. The Tigers managed to tack on 3 l points with a FG from Aidan O’Neill, closing out an extremely painful game. All in all, Towson got away with only 2 turnovers and 17 first downs while Maryland had 23 first downs and zero turnovers. Towson’s day consisted of 99 rushing yards and a total of 210 passing yards, including giving up 2 interceptions. The Terps finish the day with 367 rushing yards and 167 passing yards. Chris Heidel - It was a beautiful day for a football game here in the Baltimore Metro area between the Great Danes of Albany and the Morgan State Bears. Both teams traded punts in their first couple of series early in the first quarter but remained scoreless after first the 15 mins. Late 2nd Quarter, Will Brunson found Jordan Crockett for a 34 yard TD, goving Albany a 7-0 lead over Bears at the half.
Karl Mofor ran for a 5 yard TD, capping off a 7 play drive in the early part of 3rd Quarter to increase their lead to 13-0 over the Bears. Morgan State offense hasn't scored any points since the last game of 2016. Ethan Stark made 32 yard FG to give Great Danes 16-0 with 2 mins left in the 3rd Quarter. Mofor’s 2nd Rushing TD this afternoon gave the Great Danes a commanding lead over Morgan State by score 23-0 after 3rd Quarter. The Great Danes continued to increase their lead with an 8 play drive that ended with a 41 yard FG by Stark, the 2nd FG of the game and a lead of 26-0 over the Bears. The Bears offense only could muscle 6 first downs in this game. Coach Gattuso did a great job using 2 QB'S in this game, switching back and forth from Brunson and Sussman this afternoon. The Bears offense tried to get on the scoreboard at end of the game but the Great Danes defense stopped them at 2 yard line to seal up the win. The ACC week in review is a tough one to write about this week. The headlines are not about so much of a result of a game rather the tragic injury of Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois.
The showdown between Alabama and FSU was more of a beatdown as Alabama controIIed the Iine of scrimmage and battered Francois aII night. “We're one family and what we do and how we approach things,” commented head coach Jimbo Fisher. “Deandre's very disappointed he not only wants to play but he wants to be there with his teammates.” Fisher went on add these comments about freshman quaterback James Blackman, “James is very strong-willed independent and confident not arrogant and has a great presence to him. We had some opportunities but we just have to finish.” So what did we Iearn in week 1? CIemson stiII has a Iot of weapons. They Iooked great against Kent State but the jury is stiII out on QB KeIIy Bryant. It’s just too earIy to teII what the Tigers truIy have behind center and Kent State can hardIy be caIIed a measuring stick. FSU got run by Bama, Georgia Tech gave up a Iead to Tennessee and Iost in overtime whiIe both UNC Iost to CaI and NC State Iost to South CaroIina as favorites. AII in aII a tough week for the ACC Conference. One bright spot for the conference was Virginia Tech who beat a very competitive West Virginia team in a game that went right down to the wire.“It was a really good win for us against a really good opponent on a big-time stage and a great environment,” commented defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The Louisville Cardinals won a tough road game at Lucas Oil Stadium against Purdue while Duke beat NC CentraI 60-7 but the BIue DeviIs face a different chaIIenge this week as they host Northwestern and are Iisted as a home underdog. Pittsburg needed overtime to beat Youngstown State and BC bareIy squeaked by Northern Illinois. The ACC as a whoIe must start winning these cIose games especiaIIy against conferences Iike the SEC if they are to remain the conference of champions. The Great Danes travel to Baltimore, MD. this weekend for their
first ever meeting with the Bears of Morgan State. The Great Danes lost to Conference USA and former CAA member Old Dominion by a score 31-17 in Norfolk. Karl Mofor, the Freshman Running Back from Greenbelt Maryland, ran for 100 yards in the loss to the Monarchs last Saturday On the other side of the football, the Bears are looking for their first points of the season after being shutout by the Towson Tigers last Saturday Night at Unitas Stadium in Towson, MD. The only brightspot for the Bearswas that their defense gave up only 100 yards. Morgan State faces #24 UAlbany in a non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast by WEAA, 88.9FM. Two former Big East Rivals squared off Sunday night at FedEx Field in Landover Maryland. After both of them traded punts following their first series of the game, Freshman Quarterback Josh Jackson lead the Hokies to First and Goal at 1 yard line but had to settle for a 25 yard FG by Slye to grab a quick 3-0 lead after one quarter of play. A 10 play drive by Mountaineers in middle of 2nd Quarter ended with Will Grier finding David Sills for a 11 yard TD, givin the, the lead with a score of 7-3 late in the 2nd Quarter . Just before the end of 1st Half Josh Jackson got the lead back for the Hokies after 5 yard TD Run to give Hokies lead 10-7 at the half In 2nd half, the Mountaineers used their first series to march down the field and tie the game at 10 a piece after 34 yard FG by Molina. But the Hokies answered right back with 4 plays and a 71 yard drive that was capped with a 12 yard Run by McClease to retake the lead with 9mins left in 3rd Quarter. But Mountaineers came back to tie the game after an 8 play drive that was capped off by David Sills’ 2nd TD of the game and West Virginia and Virginia Tech are tied at 17 late 3rd quarter It did not take Josh Jackson long to retake lead with 32 yard TD pass to Laurel, MD. native Cam Phillips, creating a 24-14 lead for the Hokies. Mountaineers Head Coach Dana Holgorsen had a tough night with Big Ten Officials givina a 15 yard Penalty for unsportsmanlike to officials at the end of the 3rd Quarter. At the start of the 4th quarter, Will Grier threw his 3rd TD pass to tie the game at 24 with 11mins left. With .02 sec left Bud Foster defense came up big with the win over their rivals from Morgantown, beating them by score of 31-24. Chris Heidel - The season's first game has Blue Hens Football Coach Danny Rocco watching his team fight off struggles early on to pull away late in 2nd half with a 22-3 win over Hornets of Delaware State.. Coach Rocco said during post game press conference that his team did not play well but he was happy to get the win on opening night of 2017 the College football season.
The Blue Hens defense controlled the line of scrimmage against Hornets, only giving up 59 yards on the ground and recovering 2 fumbles and picking off Hornets QB Mc Daniels once late in 4th quarter to seal the game for Blue Hens. Diante Cherry was the player of the game, catching a TD pass and running for a TD early in the 4th quarter to give the Blue Hens their 8th straight win over their neighbor from Dover Delaware.
