Two former Big East Rivals squared off Sunday night at FedEx Field in Landover Maryland. After both of them traded punts following their first series of the game, Freshman Quarterback Josh Jackson lead the Hokies to First and Goal at 1 yard line but had to settle for a 25 yard FG by Slye to grab a quick 3-0 lead after one quarter of play. A 10 play drive by Mountaineers in middle of 2nd Quarter ended with Will Grier finding David Sills for a 11 yard TD, givin the, the lead with a score of 7-3 late in the 2nd Quarter . Just before the end of 1st Half Josh Jackson got the lead back for the Hokies after 5 yard TD Run to give Hokies lead 10-7 at the half In 2nd half, the Mountaineers used their first series to march down the field and tie the game at 10 a piece after 34 yard FG by Molina. But the Hokies answered right back with 4 plays and a 71 yard drive that was capped with a 12 yard Run by McClease to retake the lead with 9mins left in 3rd Quarter. But Mountaineers came back to tie the game after an 8 play drive that was capped off by David Sills’ 2nd TD of the game and West Virginia and Virginia Tech are tied at 17 late 3rd quarter It did not take Josh Jackson long to retake lead with 32 yard TD pass to Laurel, MD. native Cam Phillips, creating a 24-14 lead for the Hokies. Mountaineers Head Coach Dana Holgorsen had a tough night with Big Ten Officials givina a 15 yard Penalty for unsportsmanlike to officials at the end of the 3rd Quarter. At the start of the 4th quarter, Will Grier threw his 3rd TD pass to tie the game at 24 with 11mins left. Hokies Running back Travon McMillan got the lead back with a 3 yard run, bringing the score to 31-24 with 3 mins left in the game. Virginia Tech place kicker Joey Slye missed a short FG to give Mountaineers life with 1 min left in the game. Both teams combined for closest to 1,000 yards in the game. Will Grier marchd down the field got the Mountaineers in the red zone with .09 sec left in the game. With .02 sec left Bud Foster defense came up big with the win over their rivals from Morgantown, beating them by score of 31-24.
