Morgan State offense hasn't scored any points since the last game of 2016. Ethan Stark made 32 yard FG to give Great Danes 16-0 with 2 mins left in the 3rd Quarter. Mofor’s 2nd Rushing TD this afternoon gave the Great Danes a commanding lead over Morgan State by score 23-0 after 3rd Quarter. The Bears offense only could muscle 6 first downs in this game. Coach Gattuso did a great job using 2 QB'S in this game, switching back and forth from Brunson and Sussman this afternoon. The Bears offense tried to get on the scoreboard at end of the game but the Great Danes defense stopped them at 2 yard line to seal up the win.

The ACC week in review is a tough one to write about this week. The headlines are not about so much of a result of a game rather the tragic injury of Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois.
The showdown between Alabama and FSU was more of a beatdown as Alabama controIIed the Iine of scrimmage and battered Francois aII night. “We're one family and what we do and how we approach things,” commented head coach Jimbo Fisher. “Deandre's very disappointed he not only wants to play but he wants to be there with his teammates.” Fisher went on add these comments about freshman quaterback James Blackman, “James is very strong-willed independent and confident not arrogant and has a great presence to him. We had some opportunities but we just have to finish.” So what did we Iearn in week 1? CIemson stiII has a Iot of weapons. They Iooked great against Kent State but the jury is stiII out on QB KeIIy Bryant. It’s just too earIy to teII what the Tigers truIy have behind center and Kent State can hardIy be caIIed a measuring stick. FSU got run by Bama, Georgia Tech gave up a Iead to Tennessee and Iost in overtime whiIe both UNC Iost to CaI and NC State Iost to South CaroIina as favorites. AII in aII a tough week for the ACC Conference. One bright spot for the conference was Virginia Tech who beat a very competitive West Virginia team in a game that went right down to the wire.“It was a really good win for us against a really good opponent on a big-time stage and a great environment,” commented defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The Louisville Cardinals won a tough road game at Lucas Oil Stadium against Purdue while Duke beat NC CentraI 60-7 but the BIue DeviIs face a different chaIIenge this week as they host Northwestern and are Iisted as a home underdog. Pittsburg needed overtime to beat Youngstown State and BC bareIy squeaked by Northern Illinois. The ACC as a whoIe must start winning these cIose games especiaIIy against conferences Iike the SEC if they are to remain the conference of champions. The Great Danes travel to Baltimore, MD. this weekend for their
first ever meeting with the Bears of Morgan State. The Great Danes lost to Conference USA and former CAA member Old Dominion by a score 31-17 in Norfolk. Karl Mofor, the Freshman Running Back from Greenbelt Maryland, ran for 100 yards in the loss to the Monarchs last Saturday On the other side of the football, the Bears are looking for their first points of the season after being shutout by the Towson Tigers last Saturday Night at Unitas Stadium in Towson, MD. The only brightspot for the Bearswas that their defense gave up only 100 yards. Morgan State faces #24 UAlbany in a non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast by WEAA, 88.9FM. Two former Big East Rivals squared off Sunday night at FedEx Field in Landover Maryland. After both of them traded punts following their first series of the game, Freshman Quarterback Josh Jackson lead the Hokies to First and Goal at 1 yard line but had to settle for a 25 yard FG by Slye to grab a quick 3-0 lead after one quarter of play. A 10 play drive by Mountaineers in middle of 2nd Quarter ended with Will Grier finding David Sills for a 11 yard TD, givin the, the lead with a score of 7-3 late in the 2nd Quarter . Just before the end of 1st Half Josh Jackson got the lead back for the Hokies after 5 yard TD Run to give Hokies lead 10-7 at the half In 2nd half, the Mountaineers used their first series to march down the field and tie the game at 10 a piece after 34 yard FG by Molina. But the Hokies answered right back with 4 plays and a 71 yard drive that was capped with a 12 yard Run by McClease to retake the lead with 9mins left in 3rd Quarter. But Mountaineers came back to tie the game after an 8 play drive that was capped off by David Sills’ 2nd TD of the game and West Virginia and Virginia Tech are tied at 17 late 3rd quarter It did not take Josh Jackson long to retake lead with 32 yard TD pass to Laurel, MD. native Cam Phillips, creating a 24-14 lead for the Hokies. Mountaineers Head Coach Dana Holgorsen had a tough night with Big Ten Officials givina a 15 yard Penalty for unsportsmanlike to officials at the end of the 3rd Quarter. At the start of the 4th quarter, Will Grier threw his 3rd TD pass to tie the game at 24 with 11mins left. Hokies Running back Travon McMillan got the lead back with a 3 yard run, bringing the score to 31-24 with 3 mins left in the game. Virginia Tech place kicker Joey Slye missed a short FG to give Mountaineers life with 1 min left in the game. Both teams combined for closest to 1,000 yards in the game. Will Grier marchd down the field got the Mountaineers in the red zone with .09 sec left in the game. With .02 sec left Bud Foster defense came up big with the win over their rivals from Morgantown, beating them by score of 31-24. Chris Heidel - The season's first game has Blue Hens Football Coach Danny Rocco watching his team fight off struggles early on to pull away late in 2nd half with a 22-3 win over Hornets of Delaware State.. Coach Rocco said during post game press conference that his team did not play well but he was happy to get the win on opening night of 2017 the College football season.
The Blue Hens defense controlled the line of scrimmage against Hornets, only giving up 59 yards on the ground and recovering 2 fumbles and picking off Hornets QB Mc Daniels once late in 4th quarter to seal the game for Blue Hens. Diante Cherry was the player of the game, catching a TD pass and running for a TD early in the 4th quarter to give the Blue Hens their 8th straight win over their neighbor from Dover Delaware. The next game for Blue Hens is a matchup with ACC 2016 Coastal Division Champs the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg, VA. next Saturday Sept 9th at 3:30pm. Rob J. Moore - As an alumnis of Towson University (class of 2003!!), nothing pleases me more than watching the Towson Tigers in action. This Saturday, September 2nd, the Tigers open their season against one of their bitter rivals, the Morgan State Bears. As a student, I loved going to Johnny Unitas field to watch the Tigers in action and I always loved it when the Tigers took on the Bears as it was easily one of the beast matchups of the entire CAA season. Towson is looking to have a much stronger season this year, having finished last season with a 4-7 record and placing 8th overall in the CAA.
The Tigers are coached again this year by Rob Ambrose, a Towson alum class of 1996. Since taking the helm, Ambrose has led the Tigers to four winning seasons, two CAA championships, two playoff appearances and a trip to the 2013 FCS National Championship game, which unfortunately resulted in a loss stemming from a bungled field goal attempt in the first quarter. At the helm for the Towson Tigers this season is quarterback Morgan Mahalak. Mahalak played for Marin Catholic High School and earned First Team All-State honors by the San Fransisco Chronicle after going 160-for260 for 2,795 yards and 38 touchdowns. As a senior, he added 82 carries for 575 yards and 7 touchdowns. Mahalak will face off against Morgan State quarterback Elijah Staley. Staley also played for Tyler Junior College and completed 21 of 36 passes for 373 yards, including 5 TDs during the 2016 season. In high school, he was a standout prep athlete for the Wheeler wildcats and was rated a four star quarterback by ESPN.com. Towson's defense will be hard pressed to keep Staley in check. Let's hope they are up to the task. Fear the Roar! Euan McCreath - Now that the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather showdown is over it's time for the country to turn its attention to yet another clash of the titans as college football is set to open the season with an epic battle Saturday night as the Florida State Seminoles take on the Alabama Crimson Tide.
What a way to announce to the country that college football is back as these two storied programs get set to brawl for the right to earn the number one ranking in the country. Hats off to the Chick-fil-A Bowl for getting these two teams on the same field so early in the season in Atlanta, Georgia in the new Mercedes Benz Dome that seats 71,000. Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher talked about his teams challenge specifically in trying to contain dual threat Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts,”This guy’s dynamic. He can throw it and he can also run, no doubt he’s a threat. You’ve got to be disciplined in your rush lanes, cover people and react to the football.” Alabama has a reputation of being stout on the offensive and defensive lines not to mention having multiple first round draft picks in the NFL, Coach Fisher added these remarks about his own team, “I think our lines had a really good camp. We ran the football we passed blocked and did the things we had assignment wise, and worked hard on blitz pickups and different things. The running game the past game and all the different scenarios.” Coach Fisher seems to thrive playing the SEC, he has amassed an impressive 9-1 record. Redshirt sophomore Deandre Francois is poised to build on his success a year ago when he led the Noles to a 10-3 record including a victory against highly touted Michigan in the Orange Bowl. This game is enormous for the programs, the SEC and ACC not to mention the fans and the polls. Las Vegas lists the Tide as a touchdown favorite. This marks the first time in the modern era of the polls that two top three teams will face off in a season opener, in the words of Michael Buffer, “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble.” Chris Heidel - The First State Rivalry is renewed Thursday Night at Tubby Raymond Field Delaware Stadium when Hornets of Delaware State takes on the Blue Hens of Delaware (the alma mater of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco).
This is first game for the Blue Hens new Football Coach Danny Rocco, who spent 5 season at University of Richmond. Rocco has a personal 5 game winning streak when it comes to season home openers. The Blue hens have won the last seven meetings vs their friends from Dover and are hoping to keep the good times rolling with what could be their 8th consecutive victory over the Hornets. Chris Heidel - Two former Big East Rivals are going to square off during Labor Day weekend in Landover, MD. for the first time since 2005.
The West Virginia Mountaineers and Virginia Tech Hokies used to play for the Black Diamond Trophy from 1912 -2005 and Mountaineers currently have a 28-22-1 record over Hokies despite Tech winning the last two meetings. Both teams comes into this game being ranked in the AP Top 25 Pre-season poll and will travel to Prince George Co with some question marks. One big question mark is the quarterback position for both teams. They have new a quarterback in West Virginia with Will Grier, who has some issues in Gainesville after being suspended for year after testing positive for PED. For the Hokies, after losing Jared Evans for NFL Draft they will give the football to Red Shirt Freshman Josh Jackson. Hokies football coach Justin Fuente is in his 2nd season in Blacksburg after winning the ACC Coastal Division and having the greatest comeback in Hokies football history in the Belk Bowl last December. On the other side, the Mountaineers are coming into this season trying to rebound from a tough loss to the Hurricanes in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando after being 7-2 in the Big 12 in 2016. Chris Heidel - College football finally kicks off this weekend with aunique matchup with the Spiders of University of Richmond traveling to deep heart of Texas this Sunday night to face off against the Bearcats of Sam Houston State University.
The Spiders will be seeing an old friend of CAA who lead Delaware Blue Hens to 86-52 record from 2007-12: Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who has been leading Bearcats of Sam Houston State University since 2014. Coach Keeler, who has 5-6 record vs Richmond in his time in Newark, hasn't played against the Spiders since 2012. Last season, the Bearcats, who were 12-1 and undefeated in Southland Conference, ended their streak against James Madison in Quarterfinals in Harrisonburg, VA. On the other side of Football, Richmond is starting over with new head coach Russ Huesman, who comes to River City after 8 seasons at Chattanooga hoping continue the run to the FCS playoffs this season. |
